Why Timing Your License Application Matters
Most couples apply for their marriage license without considering the timing constraints — then discover them too late. Three rules combine to create a narrow window:
Waiting Periods
Some states require you to wait 24 hours to 5 days after applying before you can legally marry. In Texas, it's 72 hours — so applying the day before a Saturday wedding is too late.
Expiration Windows
Licenses expire. Oklahoma's window is just 10 days. Colorado's is 35 days. Apply too early and your license expires before the ceremony.
Appointment Availability
Many counties require appointments and slots fill up — especially during peak wedding season (May–September). Build in lead time for booking.
